Objectives for a Sustained Development of Villages

It is imperative that the country cannot grow without the development of its villages. This workshop is an opportunity to exchange ideas and best practices among states to be followed by them through exchange programmes in local governance and PRIs. It will help in allround development of states through the development of infrastructure.
The Central Government is providing sufficient financial support to the states for the infrastructure development. The government is also providing full support to the States to fulfill the dream of self-reliant villages.

The main objective of the National Workshop is to display an ideal strategies, approaches, convergent actions and innovative models in view of capacity building and training, best practices, monitoring framework, incentivization and reflection of themes of SDGs into Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP).

The National Workshop is a platform for the peer learning of various models in Panchayats that will institutionalize the process of LSDGs through the lens of thematic approach at grassroots level. And, it will provide an opportunity for information exchange and ideas through various international organizations and exchange programmes in local governance.

Panchayats are excellent in providing basic services to rural India by developing self-sufficient infrastructure in the areas of roads, drinking water, streetlights, sanitation, primary health centers and dispensaries, schools, anganwadi centres, local markets and livestock aid centre.

A platform is provided to community centres to demonstrate and share their experiences and innovative models, strategies and approaches to institutionalize the theme of ‘Villages with Self-Sufficient Infrastructure’ at the grassroots level.

Panchayat plays an important role in various developmental challenges such as poverty, public health, sanitation, nutrition, drinking water, gender, education and livelihood generation, which are in sync with SDGs. Thus, panchayat is identified as a key player in the localization of SDGs by adopting the nine thematic approaches for good governance.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is introducing the process of Localization of Sustainable Development Goals in Panchayats/Panchayati Raj Institutions. For this, it has been a sincere effort on the part of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to bring together various stakeholders at one forum.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has adopted a thematic approach for Localization of Sustainable Development Goals at the grassroots level by empowering panchayats and other relevant stakeholders in rural areas. The following are the themes for Localization of Sustainable Development Goals: Poverty Free and Enhanced Livelihoods in Village, Healthy Village, Child-Friendly Village, Water Sufficient Village, Clean and Green Village, Village with Self-Sufficient Infrastructure, Socially Secured and Socially Just Village, Village with Good Governance and Women Friendly Village.

The vision of the ‘Village with Self-Sufficient Infrastructure’ theme is to achieve self-sufficient infrastructure and ensure access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services for all. Infrastructure is crucial for the development of rural India. This theme focuses on providing support and create an empowering environment at GP level for better delivery of services in the areas of roads, streetlights, drinking water, sanitation, health and so forth.

While various urban development projects are reflective of true progress of the country, but the development of rural areas through self-sufficient ‘village republics’ is the measure of true prosperity, which is synonymous with the well-being of villages.
